Strengthening capacity to create sustainable systems

Institutional capacity development improves the ability of organizations and governments to meet the needs of their stakeholders and residents.

We strive to understand local systems and organizational cultures to guide partners through a participatory process to identify capacity gaps and help them establish action plans to fill them. We strengthen leadership, help build strong management systems, and enhance human resource skills and performance to create effective and sustainable programs. In line with USAID’s and PEPFAR’s localization goals, we support organizations to lead projects, mobilize resources, make influential partnerships, and serve their communities.

The joint houses a global team of experts and brings more than 40 years of experience and resources from thousands of projects from over 80 countries, including the U.S., across both education and health sectors.

Community partners collaborate on project
Education

Our institutional capacity-building approach prioritizes dialogue and joint decision-making; assessment and evaluation; and creating an enabling environment in which education ministry officials, school and community structures, and teachers can evolve.

We support ministries of education to deliver part-time and continuing education to out-of-school children, some of whom are mothers themselves, and who are among the millions of young people who have left the formal school system. We also help ministries roll out early warning systems to retain children in school and reduce school dropout, and are helping governments to integrate HIV prevention education into their national curricula.

Health and Social Welfare

We build the capacity of ministries of health at national, district, and sub-district levels to strengthen and integrate health and social welfare systems for coordinated care. We collaborate with departments of social welfare to develop national case management systems, drawing on policy and infrastructure to link abused and neglected children to critical services.

Policy

We build the capacity of ministries to integrate data on student performance, teacher information, and absenteeism into their education management information systems. We then work with ministries to identify or establish information units and build their capacity to analyze these data for policymaking.
